About this course

Most of the problems that hurt organisations were seen coming by somebody. A teller noticed that one customer's deposits did not match his business. A nurse saw the vaccine fridge creeping above 8 degrees. A revenue collector heard the market women complain about blocked drains three months before the flood. What decides the outcome is whether that person knows they are looking at a risk, and what to do with it.

This course is for all staff in companies and in public service. It explains risk in plain language: what it is, why it is everyone's job, and the main types you will meet, from operational and financial risk to compliance, reputational, people, technology and ESG risk. You will learn the ISO 31000 risk process without the jargon, score risks on a 5x5 likelihood and impact matrix, and see how risk appetite tells you which risks are acceptable and which are not.

You will then practise the tools that make risk management work on a normal Tuesday: controls, the three lines model, a risk register people actually read, risk statements written as cause, event and consequence, and key risk indicators with clear thresholds. Worked examples run through four settings again and again: a bank branch, a regional hospital, a district assembly and a small business.

The last part is about people. You will learn when to escalate, how to say it so you are taken seriously, what a healthy risk culture looks like, and the safe routes for speaking up. You finish with a personal risk action plan for your own role and a certificate once you pass the final assessment.
