About this course
Most organisations in Ghana do not lack a strategy. The board has approved a five-year plan, the vision is framed at reception, and the retreat in Akosombo produced a good set of priorities. The trouble starts afterwards. Business units write plans that barely mention the corporate priorities. Marketing, operations, HR, finance and IT each chase their own goals. The budget is built from last year plus ten percent, and staff sign performance contracts that measure activity rather than progress on the strategy.
This course is about the translation work in the middle. It is written for heads of department, business unit managers and strategy and planning officers who have to take a strategy from the boardroom and turn it into choices, targets, money and accountabilities at their own level.
You will follow one organisation through the whole course: Kekeli Insurance Group, an invented Ghanaian insurer with a general insurance business, a life business and group functions in Accra. You will watch its 2026 to 2028 strategy cascade from group priorities to a Kumasi claims officer's weekly targets, with the objectives, KPIs and numbers written out at every level.
Along the way you will build strategy maps and cascaded scorecards, write OKRs, run a catchball conversation in the Hoshin Kanri style, draft a business unit strategy on a page, write functional strategies that serve the corporate plan, sort out cross-functional dependencies with RACI, link the budget to strategic priorities, and turn it all into an annual operating plan and individual performance contracts. The last step is an alignment check you can run on your own organisation.
You finish with a written alignment plan for your own unit. This course focuses on translation and alignment. Execution routines, dashboards and review meetings are covered in a separate course on strategy execution.
